cccollageVisualizing Contested Cities

An international call for contributions

We define both contestation and cities very broadly, encouraging contributions which challenge our notions of both, and the relationship between them.

Contestation is everything from mass mobilizations to the buried remnants of past conflicts, from efforts by one to efforts by many. Contestation is the absence of contestation. Raise the voices of the few or the many. Use this contribution to contest, or simply reflect or illustrate or inspire.

Cities are everything from a small hamlet to Tokyo. They are human settlements, they are small towns and big cities, they are regions and networks and conurbations, they are urban and rural in conversation and contestation, they are sites and causes and systems and symbols. They are home. They are the majority and the home of the minority. They are joyful and painful, sites of violence and peacemaking.

Mixed and multi-media is everything from audio, video and photography to data visualization and mapping. Mixed media projects are fantastic. Infographics are brilliant. Collage, painting, drawing - anything that can tell a story about contestation and ccities.

Creatively radical projects are great, but so is old school and non-experimental if you have something to say. A good picture is still worth a 1000 words.

Here's how to get involved:

There are only two rules

1) Text cannot predominate – you can use text where needed, but this is not a call for essays.

2) Don’t ask permission. If you have something to say, send it to us!

Simply submit your visuals by June 1, 2016 by following the instructions outlined here.

Our goal is to produce the most inspiring and innovative collection of statements on Contested Cities.

We will show the best pieces we get at the Madrid conference, and then see where the project leads us. Anyone accepted to the conference will be part of the discussion for the future of the project.
